I Have Darth Tater

Merry Christmas!

The first present I got this year was from the VanMeters. I got a 'Darth Tater,' which funny enough, I posted about almost a year ago. Their daughter, Zöe, saw it while they were in the store and pointed it out. It's perfect!

I am also in Star Wars fan heaven because my wife got me Star Wars Battlefront and on the heels of that, my dad got me Star Wars Battlefront II. Move out soldier!

My family and I have had many blessings over the past year, and not just in Christmas presents. I was looking over photos and such for a present project I was doing and I was reminded how much I have and the experiences and memories.

Of course, rather than talk about that, I am going to plop down in front of the PS2 and see how many times I can score a head-shot on a Gungan before it loses it's appeal.

Before I go, I should quickly mention that I am now faced with a minor dilemma concerning my web site and Blogger software. For security procedures implemented by my host, the way that I FTP content up to my site is not a standard method. Suffice it to say that I can't really talk about it in detail. I have been wanting to get back to posting my blog over FTP like I was originally doing prior to this summer, but I just found out that with this new security measure in place, Blogger's software is not customizable enough to use this method. This leaves me with a couple choices, none of which I like very much:

• Use a different blog software, such as Wordpress, and post over an interface that probably will use PHP and MySQL. This would also mean transferring ... !?! Over 551 Posts about various minutiae from one system to another!
• Get a different host. This is possible, but probably a paid option, whereas the current one is free. Also, I am friends with the current system administrator for this server.
• Find some workaround involving pulling the Blogspot hosted Atom feed and importing/copying it to my server using ASP. I may have stumbled upon a way to do this and I am testing it out on the Arconati Home Page, but there are kinks to work out.

Okay, now to find my wireless controller (also a new Christmas present) and stop worrying about these delays-delays-delays.

Network Solutions

As I have known for about a week or so now, the company I work for, MonsterCommerce, is being acquired by Network Solutions. I couldn't mention it much outside my immediate family as the information was under wraps until it could be properly announced in a formal press release. I've been writing this blog post for a few days, but couldn't publish it until now.

While I was initially unsure how to react to the news, it was broken to my coworkers and I well. There are always 'after-school special' stories about the family whose dad works for the small company that got bought up by the big company and now he's being laid off. But that is not what is going to happen here.

First off, I have been assured by all members of MonsterCommerce management that there will be no layoffs. The company is also not being moved and will continue to be located in the St. Louis Area. All of the leaders of the company will remain in their same place. Realistically, not much is going to change.

Why did Network Solutions do this? Basically, from my vantage point it would appear that Network Solutions was simply wanting to have a bigger play in the ecommerce software market. However, all of their current ecommerce, design and optimization packages were services resold from other companies. They could have created an entirely new division from scratch and attempted to compete in an already crowded market. Or they could incorporate an up-and-coming leader and put the full weight of the Network Solutions brand behind the experts.

That is exactly what they have done and I for one could not be happier. Obviously there will most likely be some changes, but mostly the changes are going to mean that we are going to have a lot more money and tools behind what we do. For instance, they are looking to hire about 170+ people by this time next year. That will more than double our already crowded house of around one-hundred.

We are also going to get access to better monitoring and testing tools and the full resources of the NS infrastructure and budget.

Atlantic Records - Rob Thomas Home

I still have not finished that project where I describe the story of the night that Lisa and I met Rob Thomas. I just get writer's block when it comes to this buildup's end and the actual moment. Sorry to my two loyal readers who may have been waiting for it, but other things are happening that I need to either tend to or take care of. Life is happening too fast to slow down and blog it.

Busch Stadium: The Final Season

I don't want to be a 'traitor' to my city and I don't want to upset any of my friends, family and/or coworkers who are baseball fans. But I am personally a little sick of hearing about Busch Stadium - ..end of an era.., ...years of memories... & ...piece of history... - and all of that. It is a baseball stadium people, get over it! I mean, I like baseball and I do watch the game infrequently. I guess I shouldn't really be called a fan though. And especially now that I post publically that I don't want to hear any more about the former stadium, perhaps that proves it.

I have gone to quite a few games at Busch. I went to perhaps half-a-dozen in my childhood, with either my Grandpa, my father or both. I loved them, but mostly for the comraderie, the taste of fresh peanuts (roasted and salted) and the little sips of beer that would get snuck my way. As I got older, I went less frequently. Occasionally I'd go when there was an oppurtunity, like the time I won two tickets while working at Office Depot for selling a massive amount of Nextel phones. I felt kinda weird about it, as the reason that we outsold any other store in the district during the contest had to do with the great hail storm of 2001 here in Florissant, and the flood of contractors coming in to replace roofs. Those contractors apparently needed a lot of phones and the store where I worked was one of only a few places that had them.

That will have to be a different blog post. It's not like I didn't take the tickets and go to the game and stay for most of it and enjoy the game while there. It's just that there were others at the store who probably would have liked it more.

I appreciate the game, but am not a big fan. Call me "un-american," call me a "communist" but I honestly can't get that excited about our American pastime of baseball. My Grandpa loved it, I think, but my parents were only ho-hum about it. Yawn.

I guess I will only miss it a bit because of those memories with Grandpa. But I miss my Grandfather more than I will ever miss the stupid building.

Arconati.us Archive

I have uploaded the archived version of this website to the server. This was Arconati.us prior to mid-July. For those who were fans of the site back then, amazing how far we've come, isn't it?

Most of the links do not currently work and there are several images currently missing, even after I worked on it just to get the page to work. But what's funny about it is that this page also had a link to a subfolder of an older archive from earlier in the year, that was in it's own subfolder. That is now at http://arconati.us/archive/archive/. What happens the next time around that I update the site in a massive overhaul like this? Does everything get moved down a subfolder again? This could get really annoying. I want the options to reinvent, but I want to log (for posterity) what has come before.

I think the best option is to simply have one index file of the Arconati.us Archives, which will link and display thumbnails of the evolutions of the site over time. There were a lot of cool tricks in the previous version that I want to save and a lot of good lessons that I learned in making it that I fixed or avoided in the new version.

This little trip down memory lane is not associated with nor should it be confused with the Wayback Machine or their missing archive of this site.

"Merry Christmas!" vs. "Happy Holidays!"

This strange controversy came up for the first time this year, to my knowledge. It seems that years ago, when all you would hear around this time of year was "Merry Christmas" those of other faiths took a small polite exception to this and started a quiet campaign to spread the word that there were other holidays around this time of year, most notably the Jewish holiday of Chanukkah. In modern times and in my experience, the more politically correct response has been to wish someone a more neutral "Happy Holiday".

However, it would seem that some potentially misguided Christians are now reacting in a pendulum swing against this. There are those actively boycotting stores and even online merchants who use "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". A specific example and the confusion it caused was even highlighted by a client of ours in a private thread. Basically a "holiday" newsletter had "Merry" wishes as well as the "happy" holiday lines mixed in a bit and the supposed Christian customer that responded suggested that the merchant was a "Christian Hater". What?

I was raised Catholic, am currently Christian and raise my children that way. However, my stepmom and her children (all of whom I'm close to) are Jewish. When we gather for the holidays, I make sure my children understand the difference and yet we take part in Dreidels, the Menorah, and other Chanukkah traditions. My children love them and understand them as well as the Christmas traditions.

It's a sticky situation that the customer is trying to put the merchant in. It's ugly and proof positive that customers (and Christians) are not always right. Crack open that Bible every once in a while people! Jesus taught tolerance and acceptance. You should too.

Google Sitemaps

I have previously added Google Sitemaps to the Arconati.us home page, and have recently added back the Andale Counter that I had on the site previously.

It is going to throw off the numbers a bit, but I am going to eventually be adding the same counter to all pages of the network of sites, along with the same Google Sitemaps code. So far, traffic is a bit of a trickle of what it was prior to the server crash, but I did get a visitor or two from somewhere in China. Most likely, the users were lost, but at any rate...

Ministry

Tonight at choir practice, I got a moment to talk to Deb about something I've been wondering for a few weeks. I knew there had always been a web site for the Ferguson Christian Church Youth Ministry and I was pretty sure that Nikomas was instrumental in setting it up initially. But knowing that he was moving to Illinois (more info), I wasn't sure who was working on it.

She gave me more information about it and we led into a discussion about what I do for a living and how my expertise could really benefit either the youth group or even the church at large. We talked about different ideas and I realized as I talked more and more about it that it was something I wanted to do very much.

Deb and also Jeannie and Bob were interested in what I had to say. I don't think it has really been discussed much in the Elder's meetings, but perhaps they would be open to the church having a web site. A million ideas for this are swimming in my head right now, but I realize this is only because I've been secretly thinking about it for a while now.

Stacy gave a good sermon this morning leading into thankfulness for the upcoming holiday, but he also touched on the different things we all do as a church family that help support everyone in the family. It nudged me just a little more that I could contribute in this way.

I pray that God is calling me to do something like this. So many times, I've found myself listening to Stacy (and Mike, before him) and thinking that the minister was speaking directly to me. First day I came to church here it was that way and it has continued that way repeatedly. Yet it was not the man talking to me, but someone ... no, not someone, God speaking though them, planting seeds in my life that are helping me to grow. With Lisa's new foray into the world of communications, I think that she is going to be helping with this website idea too.

About Us

As you may have already read in the description section, the Arconati.us web site is for anyone whose last name is "Arconati," specifically for those that live in the U.S.A.. I am looking to collect information, references and special family announcements. Any family reunion announcements and invitations will take center stage. Anything I can collect and display properly in a web interface about our genealogy will be made available and accessible. I am also looking to have links to any sites run or managed by family members and to use the domain name for @arconati.us email addresses.

Right now, there is not much content in the site. In fact, I only have one page -- the home page. However, it might be helpful to have a link to the separate sites and blogs that I personally own that are going to be part of the same site in the future or part of the full network of family pages. Everything Gets Left at the Doorstep of the Blog

I've realized that for many months now, I've been posting interesting things and tags and tools to my various blogs about the different things I am interested in, but haven't really created any actual content in all this time. Pretty lazy on my part. As of today, I've not actually finished the entire story about our Meet & Greet with Rob Thomas. How upsetting. I'm disappointed in myself.

SO what to talk about? Well, my family and I just back recently from a 5-day stay at Disneyland! By my family I meant my wife, my two girls, my Dad, my stepmom Linda and myself. It was a beautiful time all around; rollercoasters (the first for both Reese and Linda), a multitude of Princesses, helpful park employees, Mice wearing pants (Mickey), Ducks without pants (Donald), a Dog that walks and talks (Goofy), a Dog that doesn't (Pluto), precision fireworks, walking on the beach at sunset and even "shampoo" the whale at Seaworld.

Back to work on Monday. Work is busy, lots of action, stress and changes, but I'm still amazingly happy at this company. We are doing great things for our clients and going to do even better things in the future. This ship is going very far.

My wife is going to take her sister to see the midnight showing of Harry Potter without me! But I think that is fitting, actually, as I went with Katie to see Serenity when it first came out.

So, a lot of my other subject oriented sites have been getting more attention than this one. I can't say for sure why. One minor mental debate that I think I settled with myself was how specific did I want to get with various sites. I mean, I have this as my main blog, the original and focus. But I have a blog for comedy and jokes I find online, a blog for links to Kid Friendly pages, a blog for outgoing links to my friends and coworkers, a page for home brew Dungeons & Dragons, my collection of interesting quotes and a website I'm working on for my brother and his appreciation of off-roading.

But I have many other interests. Do I start a separate blog for each one? One complaint that some folks have mentioned about the Blogger software is that it does not currently have the ability to set up different categories. But even if it did, how would I arrange my many interests into specific categories?

Something else I've really gotten into lately has been adding links to my del.icio.us account. I have the account set up properly so that when I add a link, it adds the links and descriptions to my home page. I've got over 800 links saved at this time. And I like the categories I've been creating as well. Some day, I envision a 'wiki-like' setup for pages on this site, where I have my content that I created with the 'related' links from my del.icio.us account automatically added in the right place on each page.

A really minor quandary in my head had nothing to do with the category issues, but more along the lines of the fact that I was running into too MUCH segmentation in different areas rather than a central area. Do I start a separate blog for the music that I listen to and think about and maybe even create? Do I start a separate blog for my political thoughts, as non-active and half-educated as they are?

Do I start a separate blog for my Christian experiences and thoughts? I'm going through an internal faith experience that I can't even describe yet, but I want to try. Do I keep these in a separate blog from the postings in my other blogs that perhaps aren't quite as 'Christian' because they mention or have mentioned cynical thoughts or rants or complaints about organized religion some of the time? Do I keep my studies about the life of Christ separate from this personal blog where I've mentioned sinful things I've done in my past?

The answer is no, finally. EVERYTHING goes here. Everything! This is by me and about me, all aspects ultimately of me and what I care about. I'm not perfect so if you thought I was go read someone else's blog. I'm trying to be better. Perhaps something I mention will be helpful to someone else or plant the proper seed in their life. Perhaps the reader will perceive me as a hypocrite. Perhaps the only folks reading this are my family and friends and couldn't possibly take a word I say seriously even with pressure. It really doesn't matter.

Holy Pagerank THREE Batman!

Today is a happy day for my inner geek. I've mentioned Google Pagerank before. Though it can be argued that it should not be used as the sole measurement of a site's success or recognition in the search engine, it is after all an indication direct from Google's servers rating a site on an exponential 10-point scale. Many webmasters I have seen struggle for awhile just attempting to get past PR 1 or 2. Well as of today, I have noted that the home page of Arconati.us now has a PR of 3!! Not exactly world famous, but a small step in that direction.

Reminds me, perhaps I should be following my statistics to see what kind of traffic I'm getting and where it is coming from, eh? D'OH!! Also makes me wonder where I'd be if I wasn't recreating the site from scratch after the unforeseen and forgiveable issues with the Hermess.org server. I could have just uploaded it as it was and modified it from there, but ... ah, reinvention is bliss!

What is even more interesting is that this page here has a PR or 1. My brother's site - Mudhorny.com - also has a page rank of 1. It even looks like Sparky's site - Hermess.org - is up to PR of 2 possibly from me linking to it in my header. Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself there... At any rate, I'm doing something right. Mostly, I have the training I've gotten from where I work; shopping cart provider - MonsterCommerce.com; for all the techniques I've used.

Darn you "Live T.V."!

Curses! Man, that is a fun word to say. Just try it: "CURSES!!" Usually, you picture this word being uttered by maniacal over-the-top villians in a comic book or cartoon. However, I've been saying it a few times lately and it is not because I've been up to any villiany (not that I'd blog about it if I was - mwu-hahah).

The reason I've been saying it lately has to do with our television. There's nothing wrong with our television, really, it's great and works fine. However, we have DishNetwork. Along with our package they also included PVR.

PVR stands for Person Video Recorder and is the feature that allows you to pause and rewind live TV. Essentially this is Tivo, if you 'kennit? Not that PVR is going to bring about world peace or anything, but it has really opened our eyes a bit and changed the way that we view TV. We commonly will start a show but pause it, take a break to eat dinner, answer the phone, go to the store and then come back and start from where we left and miss nothing. The interface on how to do this is pretty simple, with options like a VCR or DVD player.

What's the really cool secret to all this is that there is a 'skip forward' button that jumps about 25 seconds or so into the recorded content. As you can probably imagine, this comes in handy for commercials. We pause a show, go in the other room and come back and then skip a commercial. Watch the show for a while and then at the next commercial hit the skip button for this one too. As long as there is built-up time in the queue, then you can continue to skip ahead. The problem comes when the content you are skipping through catches up with "Live TV" and you can't skip forward any more. It even pops up a little message to let you know you've caught up to live TV which says "Live TV". This is the moment my villainous retort can be heard.

Curse you, Live TV. Curse you to heck.

WinMX Gone

Apparently one of the last great sanctuaries for free downloads has been closed due to the RIAA. I can't say that I used WinMX, but I will be sad to see them go. Here's hoping they find a way to win.

Update: Or perhaps, I spoke too soon! Check out this article on Slyck News. WinMX also made available within it's software connections to OpenNap Protocol Networks, which the previously mentioned article reminded me about. So the WinMX Peer Network is down, but you can connect to these other networks from within the program by going to the Networks tab, and click the label on the right to OpenNap Protocol Networks. If you don't have any listed there, then you might need to find someone who has some and download them and install/import them in to the program. The disadvantage is that you can't do multi-port downloads from multiple users, but that's livable.

So I spent the last week or so --since last Wednesday night-- sick with what I first guessed was a cold, then a flu and the finally I knew it to be Bronchitis. I'm finally back up to 100% by my estimation. I'm actually taking better care of myself then I was before. Low caffiene intake. No soda. More water than ever before. I'm paying more attention to what I've been eating as well. I'd have to say that when I went to the Dr. and noted that I'd lost almost 20 pounds in the last couple of months, I was very excited.

CSS & Developing in Dreamweaver

I am currently reading a book I borrowed from the lending library at my work called ASP Web Development with Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 by Rachel Andrew, Alan Foley, Drew McLellan, Rob Turnbull. It is very detailed and step-by-step. My favorite part about the book is it starts with chapters on CSS, web standards and accessibility. In other words, it starts off immediately teaching you how to do things RIGHT.

At the end of the second chapter on CSS, there is a list of about ten links and descriptions to good sites that deal with CSS, web standards and so on. Two Years - and Counting!

It occured to me today that my blog has been around for two years and counting this month. My first post was technically a test post I started on 2003-08-13, but I couldn't get it to work right until 2003-08-22. What humble beginnings! My total number of posts at this point is 113. That's about a post a week as it averages out. But that's specifically for this blog only. I have -here let me count... oh my, I have 11 separate blogs, most of which I touch rarely, or have abandoned for this one, my main one. Most all were hosted as part of the Arconati.us site prior to it coming down from the server (due to technical problems) on or around 2005-07-16 and were used for various bits and pieces, but some were just on blogspot and shall remain there.

As of right now, there is not much on the Arconati.us site. I currently have one page for the home, with a few rough-shod navigation links, a header and description ... AND I've got a javascript feed of my del.icio.us links. The code and instructions for setting this up can be found at del.icio.us: javascript feeds

I waited until this very moment to add a style sheet to the site in it's new form. I'm really kind of torn at the moment. Do I simply upload the entire old site that I have backed up here on my hard drive and then tweak (and tweak and tweak) it until it is what I want it to be? Or do I instead simply recreate the entire thing from the ground up -- of course using the previous version and some of it's URL path scheme / organization as a reference? What a quandary!

The site is back up and running, although there is just one page for now. There are three navigation links on the left to Home, my blog and Mudhorny.com. On the right, I've added a feature that simply pulls up all the URLs that I've been adding to my del.icio.us account.

What's unfortunate (and kinda funny), Google cached my page as the DNS was updating. But what can you do, right? According to my toolbar, I still have a PageRank of 1/10.

Tom Hanks Faces Da Vinci Code Protests: Tom Hanks and the rest of the cast of The Da Vinci Code found themselves in trouble, as the shooting location in East England was blocked by protesters.

Sister Mary Michael protested against the shooting of The Da Vinci Code based on the blockbuster book of the same title. She admitted that she had never read the thriller by Dan Brown, but what she had heard about it was enough to urge her to stage this protest.

I'll have to pray about this one, because to read the nun's quoted words makes me mad. Is it wrong to pass judgement on something, simply based on an assumption and rumors? Yet, are the historical ideas going on in the Da Vinci Code leading weak believers and non-believers down a path to question the divinity of Jesus? Should the book and/or movie be protested for this?

55,000 without power after weekend storms - KMOV.com

Over the weekend, we were without power for about 24-36 hours. It was pretty nasty at night with no air conditioning and no television or radio (not counting the battery operated one) to help the kids fall asleep, but it could have been a lot worse. My neighbors across the way were still without power this morning.

Blog*Spot Problem Fixed

I've run into the problem I mentioned in the previous post before, but I didn't wait very long last time to clear that account and create a new one. With that blog, it wouldn't have been that much work to migrate, but for this blog, it would be a lot more difficult.

Enough for the night. I will be slowly rebuilding the site over the next couple of days. Thanks!

Bug within Blogger and Blog*Spot

Perhaps this is logged somewhere but I cannot find it at this time. Right now, I cannot post this blog anywhere because my hosting on Sparky's server is not available so I have been getting ready to 'temporarily' remove the hosting of this blog from Arconati.us at Arconati.us/blog.asp through standard FTP posting and repost it into Blog*Spot's server. This should be a simple process of removing the FTP settings for the server and setting it back to Blog*Spot. But I'm getting an FTP login error from the blogger interface for some dumb reason. I've tried it a few times with same results even trying to repost older links, changing some settings back to default, setting things back to minimal wizbangs and dancing monkeys, and still I get this same error.

004 dk.eos.net.FtpError: Login incorrect.

I can't even post this at the moment... any ideas?

Update (2005/08/11): Problem fixed now.

Update (2007/01/16): I think I have found the resolution just in case anyone else was curious.

Simply, delete the browser cache, re-login to you blogger account, republish and everything back to normal.

With the latest version of Blogger, I no longer think this is going to be a problem, but I wanted to update this page with the details I just recently found. I'm no longer publishing this blog via FTP at any rate but using Blogger's new Custom Domains Feature so that changes everything.
